Collegiate Essays – 2010 Essay ContestTwenty-Eighth Private Enterprise Essay Contest for College StudentsOpen to all registered under-graduate college students in the USA. The year 2010 Private Enterprise Essay Contest for college students is underway, offering cash awards to students and professors totaling $5,250, announced Robert J. Barbera, chairman of Americanism Educational League. The 2010 contest is the 28th held annually since 1983. It is co-sponsored by the Americanism Educational League and Pilgrim Foundation. The topics for the 2010 contest are: 1. Carbon Cap & Trade 2. The Minimum Wage 3. Lobbying the Government: Good or Bad? The contest is open to all registered under-graduate college and university students in the United States. First prize is $3,000, second is $1,250, and third is $1,000. Professors/teachers of the top two finishers will each receive a $250 honorarium. Deadline for the entries is May 31, 2010 for the 2,000 maximum word essay. Essays must be typed and double spaced. Each essay must be accompanied by an Entry Form and a brief biography. Each college instructor may submit an unlimited number of essays. Entry forms are available at the bottom of this page. Cash AwardsFirst Prize – $3,000 Second Prize – $1,250 Third Prize – $1,000 Topic 1 – Carbon Cap & TradeCarbon "cap and trade" is proposed as a solution to global warming and as a step toward reducing "greenhouse gases". Is the cap and trade mechanism a real solution or is it another high-cost government program of questionably efficacy? The reality and extent of global warming can be addressed as part of this topic. Topic 2 – The Minimum WageWhat are the effects – good and/or bad – throughout the American economy of a government mandated minimum wage? Does such a mandated wage help more workers and potential workers than it hurts? Both Topic 3 – Lobbying the Government: Good or Bad?Is "lobbying" at all levels of government a legitimate and/or effective means for citizens to seek redress from their government, or a tool used mainly by the wealthy and special interests to unfairly influence public policies? GuidelinesThe essays will be judged – not on the basis of agreement or disagreement with the views of Americanism Educational League, or on the length of their bibliographies – but on their internal logic, coherence, originality, thoughtfulness, and evidence of sound research. ConditionsMaximum length is 2,000 words. Essays must be typed and double spaced. Each essay must be accompanied by an Entry Form, available on our website and a brief biography. Each college instructor may submit an unlimited number of essays. Students may submit essays on more than one topic. All entries become the property of the Americanism Educational League. Judging and PresentationsA panel of prominent Southern California business and education leaders will judge the entries. Winners will be announced in June 2010.
